TAKANAWA Redevelopments along Route 15

From Fuda-no-Tuji Crossing to Yatusyama-bashi Overpass

Sengakuji Station Area Redevelopment, July 17, 2023

In Takanawa area, there are lots of redevelopment projects, recently. The most of them are a part of or related to “MACHIZUKURI” (Urban Planning) centering around Shinagawa Station or Takanawa-Gateway Station. The 1st phase Takanawa Gate-way City will be established in March 2025 and fully by March 2026, and Station Square of Shinagawa Station west-gate will be developed in 2027, partially. The MACHIZUKURI would continue for more than ten years, e.g.North-gate building of Shinagawa Station, Route Kanjo No. 4, Extension of Tokyo Metro Nanboku-line to Shinagawa Station.

This site would like to introduce these projects from the view of the “Takanawan” (Inhabitant of Takanawa).

Fuda-no-Tuji Crossing

The Fuda-no-Tuji Crossing was the main entrance of Edo from the Tokaido Road, and in 1616, the gate called Shibaguchi-mon was built at the crossing. The name “Fuda-no-tsuji” comes from that a governmental noticeboard was located. At that time, the Edo Bay could be viewed from this spot, and it was scenic.

Yatusyama-bashi Overpass

The Yatusyama-bashi overpass was built in 1872 to have the Tokaido Road and JR Tokaido lines cross over. It was rebuilt in 1913, 1930, and 1985, and the current yellow-green one is the fourth.
It was this overpass Godzilla had landed on, arriving in Tokyo in the first movie of “Godzilla”.
“Yatsuyama” (eight mountains) is a hill at the end of the Musashino plateau, and there were eight capes, from which the name “Yatsuyama” comes.
